Feline Nutrition

Correct nutrition is an incredibly important part of pet care, whatever pet you own. An incorrect or imbalanced diet can cause serious health problems. But pet nutrition can be a very confusing subject!

There are many different cat diets on the market so whichever brand you choose, we believe it is important to purchase the correct life stage diet for your pet.

Kitten diets contain the right levels of calories and nutrients to support the large level of growth which takes place within the first 6-12 months of their life.

Junior/Adult diets would be the next step. As the growth rate slows down, the body requires fewer calories – continuing with a kitten diet beyond its requirement will often cause obesity. These life stage diets can often be found as Neutered, Un-neutered or Light diets. Neutered and light diets are highly recommended for animals which have been spayed or castrated. After neutering, an animal’s metabolism slows down and therefore requires a reduced amount of calories. Neutered diets specifically cater for this calorie reduction whilst maintaining the correct levels of other key nutrients and minerals for an adult pet.

Mature/Senior diets are for animals over the age of 8 – 10 years. These diets help to take the workload off important organs such as the kidneys, and also are lower in calories as older pets are less active.  Care to prevent weight gain means less stress on the joints and heart. Some senior diets also include supplements for the joints too. Overall we have seen the introduction of senior diets have greatly helped with the health of older cats over the past few years, and all in a non-drug way.
